Lifestyle

When developing this area we will take care to build unique and quality homes through Burns Construction, a Hamilton based building company who are 3rd generation builders and have been building quality homes since 1964.

Together we want the Tunawhakapeke subdivision to be enriched with beautifully crafted homes that reflect the strong history of the surrounding area. In addition to this we will create a sense of community through building shared spaces and low fences.

The homes will be well thought out so that individuals and families can live comfortably in functional spaces. We will ensure homeowners have easy access to local amenities, education and transport.

Alongside the live community buzz within the subdivision, there will be an access leading to the man made lake walkway at the back of the subdivision for all of the Tunawhakapeke community to enjoy.

Across this subdivision there will be 2 pedestrian access ways. The first will be built in stage 2 and lead through to Sirius Crescent and the second will be built in stage 3 and connect to Borman Road.

Tunawhakapeke will be your Urban Village in the city.

History

While we designed the urban plan for this subdivision we wished to acknowledge the history of this beautiful landscape. We discussed this with Wiremu Puke from Ngati Wairere and were fortunate to be gifted the name “Tunawhakapeke”, and are full of gratitude to have been given this unique name and will represent it with pride.

The name Tunawhakapeke came from the ancient lake it was built on in Rototuna, and when translated Rototuna literally means ‘lake eel’. Tunawhakepeke was the original name of the lake before being changed to Rototuna by settlers in 1907.

Prior to this, it was used as a traditional eeling, bird gathering and hunting lake. Lake Tunawhakapeke was about the size of Rotokauri, and existed in what is now the Borman Rd and Gordonton Rd flats of Hamilton. Tunawhakapeke, meaning ‘leaping eel,’ was eventually drained and turned into farmland.

You will notice subtle design elements throughout the subdivision that embrace the
history that has gone before us and the special connections to the land we are building on.

Community Spaces

Our plan for the Tunawhakapeke community emphasises the importance for green spaces for people to enjoy through parks, benches and spaces for children to play. These we be added into Stage 3.

We want to create a live community within a community!
