History

While we designed the urban plan for this subdivision we wished to acknowledge the history of this beautiful landscape. We discussed this with Wiremu Puke from Ngati Wairere and were fortunate to be gifted the name “Tunawhakapeke”, and are full of gratitude to have been given this unique name and will represent it with pride.

The name Tunawhakapeke came from the ancient lake it was built on in Rototuna, and when translated Rototuna literally means ‘lake eel’. Tunawhakepeke was the original name of the lake before being changed to Rototuna by settlers in 1907.

Prior to this, it was used as a traditional eeling, bird gathering and hunting lake. Lake Tunawhakapeke was about the size of Rotokauri, and existed in what is now the Borman Rd and Gordonton Rd flats of Hamilton. Tunawhakapeke, meaning ‘leaping eel,’ was eventually drained and turned into farmland.

You will notice subtle design elements throughout the subdivision that embrace the history that has gone before us and the special connections to the land we are building on.
